Two very different albums this week. We have the Aussie 'mash fest' that is The Avalanches' 'Since I Left You' and Nick Drake's pastoral masterpiece 'Five Leaves Left'. Also within this weeks cultural smorgasbord we have top five dance tracks and pop's top to toe; charting the body from the head to the soles of the feet. Comments[20]

Ugg Tasmina- Hi Lou -
The news of your party (is this the one in June for a certain big birthday for a certain hubby!) managed to travel along the grapevine up here to Glasgae!
I'm trying to arrange a visit with Miss annie - if I keep bugging her, I'm sure to get there eventually!!! - Hi Guys,
Jordon you\'ve got me green with envy - your friend was SO lucky to be sitting next to PJH and after all she wasn\'t even a fan of the gig. What a waste! I think she should have offered you the seat. I went to the Carling Acadamy (Birmingham) gig it was fantastic. He is amazing live. I believe Gary and Stephen were there also - what did you think guys? My favourite song from the new album is \'Night of the Lotus Easter. When I told this to my son, who introduced me to Nick Cave in the first place I said I love \'The night of the lonely cedars\' ... that\'s what is sounds like to me. I\'m glad he put me straight, I would have felt such a wally singing the wrong lyrics especially as he opened the show with it.
Stephen, many congratulations on the birth of your baby - I bet he/she sounds much better through a nice set of speakers!!!
Adrian, I found your site - it\'s fantastic although I haven\'t been able to indulge yet. It\'s great to navigate and there is something there for everyone.
By the way, you know that old thing I have going on with Ringo Starr - here is some more fuel to add to the fire. We have a new train station on the outskirts of Liverpool which has a direct line to John Lennon Airport. Part of the decoration is a fantastic topiary of the Beatles and guess what ... someone has cut the head off Ringo Starr!! Say no more - he really hurt the Liverpool people - although I\'m not really a person to hold a grudge he had this coming to him.
Hi Scarlet,
Are you coming our party? You seem to have had a ball in Liverpool that night - are you still speaking to Anna?
Lou
Rock star shenanigans: my good friend Anna had a bit too much to drink and we happened to be in the company of a one Stuart Murdoch with his Belle and Sebastian friends, she'd had spaghetti for tea, and after one too many could not control herself or indeed make it to the bathroom, and vomited all over the aforementioned Murdoch's shoes. It looked like he was standing in a snake pit, on Gullivers Island. Needless to say he was not amused.
I also got a puff on Jarvis Cockers cigarette - I was only a wee whipper snapper - probably under the age of cigarette buying maturity - but there was no way I was passing up this opportunity.
It all started one cold November night in Liverpool...... Pulp came on stage to a mass of pink baloons, Jarvis carefully sipping from a rum and coke and smoking a cigarette. He walked over to stage left...just inches away from where we were stood, climed the speakers, took one last puff on his fag and handed it down...TO ME....for a second time stood still...I took a puff, handed to my friend Jill, who also took a puff and then she stubbed it out on the speakers (health and safety) gave it back to me - which I kept for a number of years - Jarvis cockers fag end....Delightful............- Yes mate, we're still here. My wife had a baby three weeks ago and so I'm sleepless and out of action at the mo. My mate Dan is sitting in in studio B (in fact they taped the show on Tuesday - it's late!) We're just waiting on Gary to get his finger out and post the episode. Stay cool, we're on our way and I'll be back next issue.

Red - Rock stars sandwiches? I met Neil Hannon of The Divine Comedy in the toilets at the venue he was playing. We're all there in mid flow, so to speak and in he pops to take a whizz minutes before being due on stage. I got to say hello and all of that but what really bemused me was guys trying to shake his hands.... not really an appropriate time or place to do so! The gig was just before 'Casanova' was released and Neil was in excellent form.
I also came across Robert Smith back in the 90s when he was appearing in court. He was there, in a suit yet his hair was typical Robert Smith of The Cure. You might have thought he'd get a haircut to impress the judge, but that's not for The Cure, it seems. - Hi chaps. Just discovered your podcasts and working back through your back catalogue. Very enjoyable. A couple of suggestion for future reviews:
\'Song\' by Its Immaterial - mournful follow up to Life\'s Hard and Then You Die and a lost classic - beautifully realised reflection on the state of Liverpool in the mid 80\'s.
\'Death of the Cool\' by Kitchens of Distinction - another lost classic with the best break up song in my collection - On Tooting Broadway Station (coincidentally gay but universally sad and bitter). Famously, the band point out that no keybourds were used on the album so check out the sublime guitar work.
\'Laughing Stock\' by Talk Talk. Unsurpassed and unclassifiable. Mark Hollis appears to have made one (great) album since.
Hope these help and will keep listening.
Steve - No, Russell, no harm, no foul. One of the lovely things which Gary and I have discovered about broadcasting is that you have to start moving out of your comfort zone and responding to your listeners. Do you know the minotaur shock album? Very good indeed. Glad you enjoyed the show.
- Cheers guys for another great podcast. Two brilliant albums reviewed, both great albums. The Avalanches is a cheeky number, but Nick Drake is stunning. One that will never fade. Thanks for your top5 dance records. Ste, I hope you didn't think I was giving you such a hard time, if so I apologize. I prefer top 5 electronic records as a title. Hope you like the Reminiscent Drive cd. all the best
